Don't follow without understanding
Once a man was conducting a behavioural experiment on monkeys. 15 monkeys were caged together. A bunch of banana was hanged at the center of the cage and a ladder was kept underneath it. Whenever a monkey reached for the banana, cold water was poured upon all the monkeys. This continued and within sometime, the monkeys understood one thing that even if one among them reached for the banana all of them were showered in cold water immediately. So the monkeys themselves stopped any others from attempting to reach for the banana.
In some time the man took out one monkey from the group and introduced a new monkey. The new monkey saw the banana bunch and tried to get a banana. All the other monkeys grabbed at him and took him away from the banana. After sometime the new monkey stopped going anywhere near the banana. The new monkey had no clue about the outcome of going for a banana but still it got grouped among the others and stopped himself from reaching for the bananas.
In some time, the man replaced one after the other all the old monkeys with one new monkey each time. It so happened that even after all the monkeys were replaced, none of them would go and get the bananas as when each new monkey was introduced the rest in cage would stop them from touching the bananas so eventually they all practiced it without knowing why it was so.
We humans are like the caged monkeys; many a times we act in a particular way or follow a tradition because it has been followed by others or for generations.
