Ritual
Once a Sadhu finished meditation and got up to find a wounded kitten. As he was a very kind man, he took the kitten to his ashram and started taking care of it. The kitten eventually recovered and grew to be a pet to Sadhu. The kitten was a very naughty one, it always play around the sadhu.
The Sadhu began to get distracted from his meditation. So one day, the Sadhu asked one of his followers to tie the kitten to the tree in front of the ashram. The disciple did so without a question. In some time it became a practice that whenever the sadhu started to meditate, the kitten will be tied to the tree. After some time, the Sadhu passed away. The senior-most monk who now became the sadhu, continued to tie the kitten to the tree while he was meditating. The practice continued. Every sadhu followed the ritual of tying the kitten to the tree when they meditated. After sometime the cat died..
The whole ashram was under chaos, thinking and brought a new cat to the ashram to tie it to the tree while the sadhus meditated.
All of us are like the sadhus. We do not know the intention why some rituals were practiced, yet we follow blindly without any purpose.
Following any path without knowing where it leads or what its purpose was is like hitting in the dark
